About

A modest yet graceful shrine, the Bhimashankar Temple is nestled in dense forests. This Shiva temple holds great importance to devotees as it is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas found in India. Located about 125 kilometres away from Pune city in Bhimashankar, the temple and its surrounding area gained tremendous popularity as it has been declared as a Wildlife Sanctuary and is a reserved forest area. Built in the Nagara style of architecture, the structure is a piece of beauty that has been worked on by ancient Vishwakarma sculptors.

While there are many legends about the birth of this temple, one of them suggests that the temple was built around a Swayambhu Linga. The Linga is exactly at the centre of the floor, in the temple's sanctum. A trip to Bhimashankar is well worth it because you not only get to pray at one of Maharashtra's iconic Jyotirlingas but also get to experience spirituality in the midst of the Ghats of the Sahyadris. The town is a must-visit for devotees and nature-lovers alike.
