Deekshabhoomi

Nagpur

About

Situated in the heart of Nagpur, Deekhabhoomi is one of the biggest stupas in Asia. Inaugurated in 2001, the structure is a replica of the famous stupa at Sanchi, Madhya Pradesh. Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar embraced Buddhism here in 1956. On the day of Dhammachakra Pravartin, a mega-event is organised to celebrate the mass conversion day when more than six million embraced Buddhism at once. At the centre of Deekshabhoomi, you can take a look at Asthikalash where the mortal remains of Babasaheb are preserved.

You can also visit the Bodhi Tree on the eastern side of the structure. The tree’s branches were brought from a Sri Lankan Bodhi Tree that is originally a sapling from the Bodhivriksha under which Buddha became enlightened. Right next to the Bodhi Tree, you can visit the Bhikkhu Niwas that houses a magnificent statue of Lord Buddha presented by the Thai Monastery. Deekshabhoomi’s architectural as well as historical beauty attracts thousands of devotees every year.
