Shivneri Fort

Kusur, Junnar

About

Shivneri Fort holds critical importance in the history of the Maratha Empire. It is the birthplace of the founder of the Maratha Kingdom - Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Located in Junnar town, 90 kilometres away from Pune, the fort's structural style is worth a study. It is a hill fort with a triangular shape and apart from its main gate has an entrance called the 'chain entrance' which was used by soldiers to enter the fort holding chains. The fort's architecture and water system indicate the presence of habitation since the 1st century AD.

The spot where Shivaji Maharaj was born inside the fort was a temple for Goddess Shivai, after whom the warrior was named. Visiting this monument allows you to go back in time and relive those moments that have shaped this country's history. You can also witness the infamous Kadelot Point from where criminals with capital punishment were handcuffed and thrown down. The fort's rich past and structural beauty make it a must-visit if you are in Pune.
